Naciones Unidas – Objetivos de desarrollo sostenibles

En 2015, todos los Estados miembros de las Naciones Unidas adoptaron un ambicioso plan para trabajar hacia «la paz y la prosperidad de las personas y el planeta, ahora y en el futuro», conocida como la Agenda 2030 para el Desarrollo Sostenible. El objetivo es garantizar la igualdad económica y social para 2030, al tiempo de abordar el cambio climático y la preservación del medio ambiente.

En el corazón del marco se encuentran 17 Objetivos de Desarrollo Sostenible (ODS) que exigen acciones específicas para garantizar un «futuro mejor y sostenible para todos». El cumplimiento de los ambiciosos objetivos de la ONU requiere innovación y cambio a nivel multinacional y gubernamental.

Hace un tiempo grupos sociales pertenecientes a diferentes comunidades han visibilizado sus demandas ambientales cuestionando actividades y procesos de diversas industrias. Esto provoca un conflicto entre dos actores Comunidad-Empresa, generado por falta de información o subestimación, en la mayoría de los casos la falta de dialogo constructivos que hace escalar los problemas hasta motivar escrutinios de actividades tan básicas para la sociedad como son las que competen a las industrias productivas primarias.

Una o dos décadas atrás era impensable soñar con una comunicación global inmediata, los adelantos tecnológicos en materias de comunicación han causado un fuerte impacto en la vida cotidiana, de uno a otro rincón del mundo nos hemos transformado en una comarca global de fuerte apego a las redes sociales. Lo que es una gran oportunidad de difusión para poder compartir experiencias y conocimientos, a veces se transforma en una avalancha de información o manipulación que es usada como herramientas para escalar conflictos. Pero lo mas importantes es que rompe diálogos, exponiendo verdades, mentiras, verdades a medias para todos los gustos. En las sociedades modernas donde nuestras ideas son tan fáciles de trasmitir no existen matices, hay una simplificación que nos vuelve a poner otra vez en el punto de partida.

¿Quién establece la agenda primero?, ¿por qué situaciones que pueden ser claras, transparentes y generar una canal de comunicación se transforman en enfrentamientos insostenibles?, ¿quién tiene la verdad?, ¿quién es el responsable? Y así podemos agregar infinidad de preguntas que ya resultan ambiguas.

Hay un espacio en donde la geociencia no ha logrado imponerse, probablemente sus lazos estrechos con las industrias, la exposición limitada a la geología en la currícula escolar, la falta de modelos positivos a seguir, la percepción pública de las ciencias de la Tierra como algo misterioso e incierto. Es un tiempo que presenta oportunidades para compartir experiencias, visiones y sobre todo tomar esos espacios que nos permitan construir acuerdos sostenibles como representantes de esta gran comunidad global.

Los objetivos de desarrollo sostenibles son ambiciosos porque en ellos se presentan transformaciones que deben ser colectivas, en un momento en que la ciencia está bajo una intensa indagación, nunca ha sido más importante destacar la contribución positiva que los científicos de la Tierra pueden generar con relación a un futuro sostenible.
